Ryan Mathews Expected To Reclaim Chargers Starting RB Job

Chargers running back Ryan Mathews is expected to be named the starting running back for Monday night’s game against the Broncos, per Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune San Diego.

“The team had no incentive Wednesday to declare its starting running back five days before a Monday night game against the Broncos,” Gehlken wrote. “Indications are, however, the Chargers believe Mathews is ready to take that next step and return to the starting lineup.”

For the past two weeks, Jackie Battle had been named the starting running back. During those two games, Mathews’ workload increased from 16 carries touches against the Chiefs in Week 4 to 18 touches against the Saints last Sunday. It was evident last weekend that Mathews had regained his role as the Chargers feature back as Battle only had six touches. If the past two games are signs of things to come, expect Mathews to get 20-plus carries Monday night.
