Ryan Mathews Cleared For Contact, Questionable For Sunday

Scott Bair of the North County Times believes  that RB Ryan Mathews will not play in Sunday’s game against the Titans, despite the fact that he has been cleared for contact.

“I feel like I’m a caged lion,” Mathews said. “I can’t wait to get back out there, but you have to be patient and give it the time it needs to heal right. It’s a broken bone, so I have to wait.”

The Chargers have slowly eased Mathews back into their offense. He participated in individual drills last week, and his activity was ramped up yet again after a weekly X-ray confirmed that his bone is healing properly. Whether Mathews is allowed to play this Sunday or next, the risk of re-injury is always present for the often injured RB.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Tribune mentioned that Ryan Mathews‘ chances of playing in Week 2 are looking very slim. Mathews broke his collarbone during the preseason and was expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Coach Norv Turner said that Mathews could be cleared for contact anytime from Wednesday, to next week. A return this Sunday looks very unlikely, as Mathews’ situation seems to be rather unstable.

Ronnie Brown and Curtis Brinkley are expected to fill in for Mathews if he doesn’t play.
