Saints Claim TE John Phillips Off Waivers, Cut Brian Dixon & Chris McCain

Nick Underhill reports that the Saints have claimed TE John Phillips off waivers from the Broncos and placed Brian Dixon and Chris McCain on waivers Monday.

Phillips, 29, is a former sixth-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2009. He spent four years in Dallas before signing a three-year contract with the Chargers as an unrestricted free agent in 2013.

The Chargers released Phillips last year before bringing him back at the start of the season. He wound up signing a contract with Denver back in July but was cut loose last week.

In 2015, Phillips appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers and recorded 10 receptions for 69 yards receiving and one touchdown.

McCain, 24, wound up going undrafted out of California back in 2014. He’s managed to make the 53-man roster in each of his first two years in the NFL and was in the final year of his three-year, $1.53 million rookie contract and was set to make a base salary of $600,000 for the 2016 season.

McCain was traded to the Saints but was waived as the team cut their roster down to 53 players. Dallas signed him to their practice squad just a few days later but unfortunately waived him in September.

The Saints signed him to their practice squad a few weeks ago before promoting him to their active roster. New Orleans waived McCain shortly afterward and re-signed him to their practice squad once he cleared waivers.

In 2016, McCain has appeared in two games and recorded one tackle for the Saints.
