Saints Could Be Forced To Address G Jahri Evans’ Contract Next

Evan Woodberry of The Times Picayune mentions that the Saints could be forced to do something with veteran G Jahri Evans in the next 24 hours in order to fit C.J. Spiller‘s new four-year contract into their cap.

New Orleans got newly acquired LB Dannell Ellerbe to agreed to a salary reduction on Friday to facilitate the trade with the Dolphins, but even that is unlikely to be enough savings to get them cap compliant, according to Woodberry.

Spotrac mentions that the Saints currently stand an estimate $3.7 million over the cap, without factoring in the specifics of LB Ramon Humber and Spiller’s new contracts.

Earlier in the week, Mike Triplett of ESPN.com was hearing that the Saints could move on from Evans.

Evans is in line to make a total of $7.5 million for the upcoming season and carries a cap figure of $11 million, so he represents one of the easiest sources of cap relief for the Saints.

Evans, 31, signed a seven-year, $56.7 million contract that included $19 million guaranteed back in 2010. He still has two years remaining on that contract that includes base salaries of $6.8 million in 2015 and another $8 million in 2016.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Evans would free up $6 million in available cap space while creating $4.2 million in dead money.

Over the course of his nine-year NFL career, Evans has missed just two games for the Saints. Pro Football Focus has Evans rated as the No. 46 guard in the league out of 68 qualifying players.
