Saints First-Round DE Marcus Davenport Undergoing Thumb Surgery

Nick Underhill of the Advocate reports that Saints first-round DE Marcus Davenport will undergo thumb surgery following the team’s minicamp.

However, Underhill says that the injury is not considered to be significant and he should be back in time for the start of training camp.

Davenport, 21, was taken with the No. 14 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft by the Saints after they traded up with the Packers from No. 27 overall. According to OverTheCap.com, he receives a $13,791,272 contract that includes an $8,110,016 signing bonus.

The contract includes a fifth-year option for the Saints to pick up in 2021. It’s worth mentioning that the fifth-year option is only guaranteed for injury and won’t prevent the two parties from working on a long-term extension.

During his four-year college career at Texas-San Antonio, Davenport recorded 185 total tackles, 37.5 tackles for loss, 21.5 sacks, eight pass defenses, two fumble recoveries, six forced fumbles, and scored one defensive touchdown.
