Saints HC Sean Payton “Squarely In Camp Of Baker Mayfield Believers”

According to Charles Robinson, there has been buzz for about a month now that Saints HC Sean Payton is “squarely in the camp of Baker Mayfield believers.” Robinson adds that the talk of Payton having interest in Mayfield is “not going away” at the Senior Bowl.

Robinson explains that Drew Brees is super competitive, even in meetings, and a prospect has to keep up in 2018. The last time the Saints added a rookie quarterback, Robinson says he got “steamrolled mentally and never recovered.”

However, Payton reportedly likes the competitive streak Mayfield brings to everything.

The Saints are entering a really intriguing offseason, considering that Brees is in line to be an unrestricted free agent and New Orleans can’t prevent him from testing the open market, as his contract prevents them from franchising him.

Brees has considerable leverage with the Saints, so it’s not all that surprising to hear that they’re eyeing some of this year’s draft prospects.

In fact, the Saints have continuously been linked to quarterback prospects for the past few years.

Mayfield will be one of the most discussed players during the draft process, as some evaluators have questions about his height and prefer some of the other top prospects such as Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen and Josh Allen.

However, Mayfield was a highly productive player and we’ve seen some shorter quarterbacks have plenty of success in the NFL. There are sure to be teams who end up being big believers in Mayfield and his ability.

During his four-year college career at Texas Tech and Oklahoma, Mayfield threw for 14,607 yards while completing 68.5 percent of his passes to go along with 131 touchdowns and 30 interceptions over the course of 48 games. He also rushed 1,083 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Mayfield was the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner.
