Saints Hire Rob Ryan As Defensive Coordinator

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that the New Orleans Saints have in fact hired Rob Ryan as the their new defensive coordinator.

Reports from earlier in the week suggested that a deal was close to being finalized, but the Saints had an interview setup with Georgia DC Todd Grantham on Thursday. Grantham announced yesterday that he was removing himself from the coaching search, which left Ryan as the only candidate for the job.

Ryan was reportedly close to signing on to be the Rams next coordinator, but the two sides decided against the idea.

Ryan will replace Steve Spagnuolo after only one season as well. New Orleans’ defense ended up ranked as the league’s worst defense and allowing the most yards for a season of any defense in NFL history. They’ll now make the transition to Ryan’s  3-4 base defense and will need to begin the process of shedding some players who no longer fit what they’re trying to do.
