Saints Not Pushing To Sign WR Anquan Boldin, Despite Recent Report

Katherine Terrell of the Times-Picayune reports that the Saints are not making a push to sign free agent WR Anquan Boldin to a contract, despite a recent report.

However, Terrell says that the Saints did look into to possibly adding Boldin earlier in the summer, but ultimately did not submit a contract offer to him.

On Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that the Saints were “making the strongest push” to sign Boldin. Rapoport added that Boldin loves former 49ers WR coach John Morton, who’s now with the Saints.

The Saints could use a veteran like Boldin to go with a very young group of receivers. Even as he’s aged, Boldin has been a reliable receiver for teams like the Ravens and 49ers.

Boldin visited with the Lions close to a month ago, but left Detroit without a contract. Before that, Boldin met with the Redskins, but they too did not offer him a deal.

The Bengals were also mentioned as a potential landing spot for Boldin, but their director of player personnel Duke Tobin said that hadn’t considered bringing him in.

Boldin, 35, is a former second-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2003. He spent seven years in Arizona before being traded to the Ravens in 2010. Baltimore later traded him to the 49ers where’s he’s remained for the past three seasons.

Boldin finished out his two-year, $12 million contract that included $5.5 million guaranteed and has been testing the market as an unrestricted free agent.

In 2015, Boldin appeared in 14 games for the 49ers and caught 69 passes for 789 yards receiving and four touchdowns. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 33 overall receiver out of 119 qualifying players.

We have him featured in our Best Available Free Agents list.
