Saints Place S Jairus Byrd On Season-Ending Injured Reserve

The New Orleans Saints announced Friday that they have placed S Jairus Byrd on season-ending injured reserve with a torn lateral meniscus.

Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan said of Byrd’s injury: “It’s terrible for the young man. He has worked so hard.

This is terrible news for an already struggling Saints’ defense.

New Orleans signed Byrd to a massive six-year, $54 million contract that includes $28 million guaranteed back in March. In order to land Byrd, they had to release a number of players and even trade away guys like RB Darren Sproles, so this move is already looking like a poor decision for the Saints.

Byrd still has base salaries of: $1.3 million (2014), $2 million (2015), $7.4 million (2016), $8.6 million (2017), $8.6 million (2018), $8.6 million (2019) remaining on his contract.

Byrd, 27, finishes the season with 22 total tackles, one forced fumble and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has Byrd rated as the No. 65 safety out of 76 qualifying players over the course of four games.
