Saints Release Veteran TE Alex Smith, Sign TE Michael Egnew

The New Orleans Saints made a number of roster moves on Monday including signing TE Michael Egnew to a contract and releasing TE Alex Smith, per Mike Triplett.

New Orleans elected to sign Smith to a contract just over a week ago, but it appears as though they were looking for a younger option.

Smith, 29, is a former third-round pick of the Buccaneers back in 2005. He wound up playing out his rookie contract with the team before signing on with the Eagles. Since then Smith has played for the Browns and the Bengals.

In 2014, Smith appeared in just two games for the Bengals, but didn’t record a single statistic.

Egnew, 25, is a former third-round pick of the Dolphins who has yet to live up to his draft status. Prior to his arrival in Pittsburgh, Egnew spent two years in Miami, was claimed by the Lions in 2014 and cut a week after, to later land on the Jaguars practice squad.

In his last season of activity on 2013, Egnew appeared in 15 games for Miami and caught seven passes for 69 yards and no touchdowns.
