Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that QB Drew Brees has a shoulder injury that will likely cause him to potentially miss “several games.”

Earlier in the day, Saints HC Sean Payton mentioned that it was too early to say if Brees could miss some game, and they were planning to give him time to heal.

“Well, I think it’s early right now,” Payton said Monday when asked if the team might consider sitting Brees down and letting him heal, via ESPN.com. “Today’s the day after, and we’ll take a peek and see how he’s feeling, coming along and see where we’re at Wednesday. Certainly we’ll do the best thing for him and for where he’s at. But I think it’s early to say that.”

Following Sunday’s loss to the Buccaneers, Brees admitted that his shoulder was bothering him and affected some of his throws during the game.

Maybe on a few throws,” Brees said when asked if the shoulder was bothering him. “I want to say a few balls downfield didn’t come out very well.

New Orleans has Luke McCown as their No. 2 quarterback followed by rookie Garrett Grayson in the event that Brees ends up missing some time.

Brees, 36, has two years remaining on his five-year, $100 million contract that included $40 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $18.75 million and $19.75 million over the next two years.

This season, Brees has thrown for 610 yards while completing 62.8 percent of his passes to go along with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
