Saints HC Sean Payton told reporters on Thursday that offseason acquisition S Jairus Byrd is undergoing surgery on his back today, per Mike Triplett.
Payton did say that Byrd is expected to be a full go for training camp, which is at least a good sign.
This is hardly the type of news the Saints want to hear after they signed Byrd to a six-year, $54 million contract that includes $28 million guaranteed.
Thankfully, the injury doesn’t sound like anything major, so hopefully this will be the last we hear regarding Byrd’s back moving forward.
Last year, Byrd totaled 48 tackles, 4 sacks, one interception and a forced fumble for the Bills defense. Pro Football Focus has Byrd rated as the No. 8 safety in the league last season.
