Saints Re-Signing Veteran S Roman Harper

The New Orleans Saints are re-signing veteran S Roman Harper to a contract on Tuesday, according to his agency.

There had been talk that the Saints could re-sign Harper to add some veteran leadership to their secondary, so this doesn’t come as a complete surprise. Nick Underhill reports that Harper stopped by the Saints’ facility last week.

Harper joins a talented young group of safeties that includes Kenny Vaccaro and second-round pick Vonn Bell to go along with veteran Jairus Byrd.

Harper, 33, is a former second-round pick of the Saints back in 2006. He spent eight years in New Orleans before signing on with the Panthers back in 2014. However, his contract voided in February, making him a free agent.

In 2015, Harper appeared in all 16 games for the Panthers and recorded 73 tackles, two fumble recoveries and five pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 67 safety out of 88 qualifying players.
