49ers Rumors: Mike Wallace, Vincent Jackson, Alex Smith, Carlos Rogers, Ted Ginn, Josh Morgan

Vincent Jackson & Mike Wallace

It’s been no secret that the San Francisco 49ers have plans to upgrade the wide receiver position.

Matt Maiocco of the CSN Bay Area mentions that the 49ers will target both Mike Wallace and Vincent Jacksonat a specific price.” Maiocco adds that the team will not join in on any “bidding wars” for available players.

San Francisco would have to part with a first-round pick to even consider signing Wallace away from the Steelers and there will almost certainly be a ton of interest in Jackson so it’s hard to say that they’ll have a legitimate shot at either if they plan on sticking to their requirements.

Previous reports have said that the team is looking to add a player in both the free agent market as well as the upcoming draft in April.

Alex Smith

Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News reports that “nothing imminent” regarding a contract extension for 49ers QB Alex Smith who will be a free agent as of next Tuesday.

Jim Harbaugh has been adement that Smith will be back as the team’s starting quarterback next season so I’d really be surprised to see them pass on him. Smith will garner some interest on the open market but San Francisco should be able to get him under contract for a reasonable price.

If he’s brought back for another season, it would be the first time in his NFL career that he’ll have the same offensive coordinator for two straight seasons. That’s pretty amazing in itself.

Carlos Rogers

Maiocco also discusses CB Carlos Rogers future with the team by writing that the 49ers will allow market to establish his value before making any decisions about re-signing him.

Rogers put together a great season for them last year and proved to be a steal in free agency. It’s been a little strange to see how they’ve handled the situation as Rogers has said to be open to signing a reasonable contract (four or five-year deal that would pay him close to ) but San Francisco obviously must feel that it’s too high for them to consider at this point.

Ted Ginn Jr.& Josh Morgan

CSN Bay Area is reporting that the 49ers plan to keep the “communication lines open” between them and their free agent WR’s Ted Ginn and Josh Morgan.

Morgan showcased a lot ability early on in the season but an untimely injury cost him the rest of the 2011 season. Ginn’s impact on special teams good enough to influence a number of their games and had he been healthy for the championship game against the Giants, we could be talking about them defending their sixth Super Bowl title.

Both players could be bargains on the open market but it’s hard to say how much interest either will generate at this point.
