Seahawks Tom Cable & Trent Kirchner Withdraw Names From 49ers’ GM Search

Seahawks assistant HC Tom Cable has officially withdrawn his name from the 49ers’ heading-coach search, according to his agent, Doug Hendrickson.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that Seahawks executive Trent Kirchner has withdrawn from the 49ers’ GM search and plans to remain with Seattle.

  • According to Garafolo, Kirchner and Seahawks GM John Schneider have a very close working relationship and he appears to be comfortable remaining in Seattle.
  • Ian Rapoport mentions that Seahawks assistant HC Tom Cable may be next to withdraw his name from their head-coaching search.

Kirchner recently interviewed for the job along with fellow Seahawks executive Scott Fitterer, so it’s still possible they could lose someone to the 49ers.

Alex Marvez of the Sporting News reported Monday that the 49ers are “honing in on” hiring their next general manager and they plan to set up interviews with finalists this week.

Sources have told Marvez that there’s a chance the 49ers will hire a GM without prior experience working with one of their head-coaching candidates.

Before that, ,Marvez mentioned that while he can’t say he’s the front-runner for the 49ers’ GM position, sources have told him that there’s “positive buzz” about Packers player personnel director Brian Gutekunst following his interview with the team.

Matt Maiocco hears that GM candidate Terry McDonough wanted to hire Kyle Shanahan as his head coach from the beginning.

It will be interesting to see who gets follow-up interviews with the 49ers, as it should give us a good idea of the 49ers’ plans for the head-coaching vacancy.
