Seahawks Made TE Luke Willson A Contract Offer, But It Wasn’t “Extremely Serious”

Seahawks TE Luke Willson mentioned he did not take the Seahawks’ recent contract offer to him seriously and was surprised to hear HC Pete Carroll say during a press conference that they tried but couldn’t get a deal done.

I mean, there was an offer extended,’’ said Willson, via Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. “I don’t know if it was extremely serious, we’ll leave it at that. It wasn’t, I didn’t really respond to it. … I was a bit surprised, to be completely honest with you, when I read that report (of Carroll’s comments) or saw that online. I was surprised that that kind of was let out there to the media or public because it was not extremely official, at least in my mind. But who knows.’’

Regardless of the contract situation, Willson went on to say that he would still like to re-sign with Seattle. Although, he plans on exploring all of his options this offseason.

I’d like to be back in Seattle,’’ said Willson. “I have said that it’s like a home to me. But again, I am going to explore all the opportunities. A lot of people have asked what I am looking for and this that and the other and I think for me, this is kind of the first time I’ve come out in public and said this, but for me it’s a bit of a sliding scale in the sense of that it’s not all about money —does money play a factor? Yes. But a winning culture, Seattle is a great city to play in.”

Willson, 27, is a former fifth-round pick by the Seahawks in the 2013 NFL Draft. He just finished his four-year rookie contract and is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

In 2016, Willson appeared in 11 games for the Seahawks and accumulated 15 receptions for 129 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 42 overall tight end out of 63 qualifying players.
