Seahawks Sign LB Bobby Wagner To A Four-Year, $43M Extension

Michael Robinson of NFL Media first reported that the Seahawks and MLB Bobby Wagner have agreed to terms on a contract extension

  • Mike Garafolo reports that Wagner’s extension is worth $43 million over the course of four years.
  • According to Ian Rapoport, Wagner will receive $22 million guaranteed as part of this deal.

This contract will make Wagner the highest paid middle linebacker in the NFL.

Seattle mentioned that they wanted to get a long-term deal in place with Wagner at some point in the near future, but it appears as though this deal came together much quicker than anticipated.

It’s a smart move for the Seahawks to address Wagner now, seeing as Panthers MLB Luke Kuechly could have set the bar even higher had they waited. Beyond that, Wagner would have been a highly sought after free agent, which means he would have been a prime candidate for the franchise tag.

Wagner, 24, was entering the final year of his four-year, $4.307 million rookie contract that included a base salary of $977,427 for the 2015 season.

In 2014, Wagner appeared in 11 games for the Seahawks and recorded 104 tackles, two sacks, and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has Wagner rated as the No. 5 inside linebacker in the league out of 60 qualifying players.
