Seahawks Still Hoping To Sign K.J. Wright & Cliff Avril To Extensions

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the Seahawks haven’t given up hope of signing DE Cliff Avril and LB K.J. Wright to long-term extensions, despite the fact that the NFL season will kickoff tomorrow night.

According to La Canfora, Seattle is still “exploring” their options regarding the two players at this point in time.

The Seahawks wound up getting a pretty good deal on Avril when they signed him to a two-year, $13 million contract that included a $4.5 million signing bonus. He’ll make a base salary of $7 million for the upcoming season, but he’s clearly an solid pass rusher off the edge for their defense.

Last year, Avril appeared in 15 games and totaled 20 tackles, eight sacks, five forced fumbles and a recovery. Pro Football Focus had Avril listed as the No. 12 defensive end in a 4-3 system last season.

Wright, 25, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and will make $1.389 million for the 2014 season. He has the ability to hold up well in coverage and has also proven to be a solid tackler.

Last season, Wright recorded 80 tackles, 1.5 sacks, four pass defenses and a fumble recovery over the course of 13 games. Pro Football Focus had Wright listed as the No. 13 outside linebacker in a 4-3 system, which included a very high rating in pass coverage.
