Sean Payton Prepared To “Keep His Options Open?”

Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune writes that Saints head coach Sean Payton will probably hold off on signing a new contract with the team and is more likely to “keep his options open.”

Triplett adds that the Saints will not force Payton sign a new contract and wouldn’t ask him to stay in New Orleans against his will.

There is no indication that Payton is unhappy in New Orleans or looking to leave the Saints,” writes Triplett.

According to Triplett’s sources, the Cowboys are the only team that could entice Payton to leave New Orleans, which coincides with numerous rumors in the past few weeks since the news of the league voiding his contract become public.

Dallas has repeated said that they intend to keep Jason Garrett in place as their head coach and have had no internal discussions regarding Payton. ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that sources have informed him that it’s unlikely that the Cowboys would be willing to payoff Garrett and hire Payton.

It seems as though Payton will probably be back with the Saints next season, but it’s hard to say when a deal could be finalized.
