Several Teams Reportedly Interested In Rams QB Nick Foles

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that “several” teams have interest in Rams QB Nick Foles, and he believes this could be something to watch in the coming days.

  • Peter King adds that the Rams could get a 2016 draft pick for Foles.
  • However, King doesn’t see the Broncos will be interested in acquiring Foles.

A few weeks ago, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk spoke with a source with knowledge of the dynamics who predicted that Foles will likely will be gone by the start of training camp.

Florio’s source added that even if Foles is with the team for training camp, he’ll definitely will not be on the team for the start of the season.

The Rams are prepared to use the No. 1 overall pick on Jared Goff, according to numerous reports, and they have already re-signed Case Keenum to a one-year deal. Beyond that, Los Angeles still has Sean Mannion on their roster as a developmental option.

Many assumed that Foles’ contract would leave him as a less appealing trade option, even though there are a few teams in need of a quarterback. However, Jason Fitzgerald points out that it would only cost a team $1.75 million to trade for Foles.

As of now, Foles counts $8.75 million against the Rams’ 2016 salary cap, which breaks down to a $6 million roster bonus that is guaranteed, $1 million of signing bonus proration and $1.75 million in base salary.

Releasing Foles would result in a cap hit of $8 million, and designating him as a post-June 1 release would only reduce this figure to $7 million.

If the Rams were able to find a trade partner, they would pick up $6.75 million in cap space and just $2 million in dead money, but you can bet teams wouldn’t be willing to include more than a late-round pick for him.

Foles, 26, came over in a trade from the Eagles that sent Sam Bradford to Philadelphia. He had one year remaining on his rookie contract when the Rams signed him to a two-year, $24 million extension back in August of last year.

In 2015, Foles completed 56.4 percent of his passes for 2,052 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 36 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.
