“Several” Teams Showing Trade Interest Patriots RB Dion Lewis, Deal Unlikely

Michael Lombardi of the Ringer is hearing that “several” teams are trying to get RB Dion Lewis from the Patriots, but a trade is considered unlikely.

There has been talk that the Patriots could make one of their running back available for trade, but Lombardy makes it clear the Patriots will not be trading Lewis.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard about teams showing interest in Lewis, as Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald previously reported that multiple teams during the offseason and leading up to the start of the season had contacted the Patriots and expressed interest in him.

The Patriots’ backfield also consists of James White, Mike Gillislee, Rex Burkhead and Brandon Bolden, so it’s possible they could listen to offers for one of these running backs.

Lewis, 27, is a former fifth-round pick of the Eagles back in 2011. After two years in Philadelphia, Lewis was traded to the Browns in return for Emmanuel Acho. He had a brief stint with the Colts before signing a future/reserve contract with the Patriots in 2015.

Lewis is in the final year of his three-year, $3.1 million contract that included a $600,000 signing bonus and stands to make a base salary of $1.2 million for the 2017 season.

This season, Lewis has rushed for 271 yards on 58 carries (4.7 YPC) and two touchdowns for the Patriots. He has also caught 10 passes for 58 yards receiving and added 266 kick return yards. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 6 running back out of 54 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding a potential Lewis trade as the news is available.
