Some Options For Jason Campbell

Jason Campbell‘s 2011 season changed very quickly in Week Six when he broke his collarbone against the Cleveland Browns. Oakland was sitting at 4-2 at the time and had a shot at winning the division which prompted them to trade for Carson Palmer. With Palmer’s arrival in Oakland, the team no longer has much use for another quarterback which will force to test the free agent market for the second time in as many years.

Steve Corkran of the Bay Area News Group discussed some of the potential options for Campbell during a Twitter Q&A session. Corkran lists:  the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins and Seattle Seahawks as the best “fits” for Campbell.

John Elway has said that he’s looking for a “pocket passer” during the offseason and Campbell hasn’t exactly been the ideal model for that in years past.

Kansas City has said that they would like to bring in some competition for Matt Cassel rather than anointing him the clear cut starter. That’s not to say that they’re unwilling to peg him as their starting quarterback but they would rather have someone pushing him for the job. Campbell could make sense here but Kyle Orton could also be re-signed.

All reports regarding the Dolphins quarterback position are one of three options: 1. Peyton Manning, 2. Matt Flynn, and 3. draft a quarterback. Campbell comes in a sad fourth on the list and you could argue that keeping Matt Moore would be a better option than signing Campbell. I can’t see it happening.

Despite having Tarvaris Jackson as the team’s only quarterback there really hasn’t been a lot of talk about their plans for the position. You would have to think that they’ll consider all available options whether it’s Peyton Manning or drafting a quarterback at some point but I could see Campbell’s name coming up a speculative option to pair with Jackson.

Other team’s could show interest but it’s going to be hard for him to secure anything better than a backup job next season.
