Speculative Options For Steven Jackson Should He Become Available

Technically speaking, Rams RB Steven Jackson is not set to become an unrestricted free agent in the coming months. He was a $7 million option that would allow him to return to St Louis next season, which appears to be something that he’s at least considering.

We’re going to sit down this next coming month, in February,” Jackson said, per Jim Thomas of the St Louis Post Dispatch. “Both sides have been very classy about how they’ve handled the situation. We’re going to talk about my possibilities, where I want to go, and does it fit? I believe we’ll get everything resolved before March.

It has been widely assumed that Jackson will turn down the option and seek a multi-year extension that will almost certainly net him more than $7 million in guaranteed money.

Thomas writes that the Falcons, Packers and Steelers are the three “most logical suitors” for Jackson should he become available. Thomas adds that although some of these teams may not have a lot of cap space to work with, Jackson may only command a deal that would pay him between $3 million and $5 million annually.

All three of these teams could use some help at running back and the Packers have been rumored to be interested in Jackson for some time, so it will be interesting to see if they make a run at him in the coming months.

We’ve taken the liberty to include Jackson in our Top 50 Free Agents list despite the fact that he may not become a free agent at all in 2013.
