Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network mentions that he wouldn’t be surprised to see Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey wound up drafted for the Panthers at No. 8 overall, as he’s currently one of the hottest names in league circles.
Jeremiah adds that even teams with established running backs love McCaffrey, considering that he can be utilized in a number of ways.
“He produces points,” one source tells Jeremiah.
A few weeks ago, McCaffrey was being mentioned as someone to watch in the mid-teens and he’s recently been a popular name tossed out as an option for the Panthers at No. 8 overall. However, it sounds like he may not even last that long.
McCaffrey tested so well and has shown dynamic ability during his college career that some evaluators believe he could actually play slot receiver in the NFL. McCaffrey runs great routes and should be able to line up all over the field, so it’s possible he could fit in almost any offense, due to his versatility.
McCaffrey, 20, is among the top running back prospects in what’s considered to be one of the deepest classes in years. He was a Heisman trophy candidate during his junior year at Staford.
McCaffrey has visited with the Redskins, Panthers and Broncos in recent weeks.
During his college career at Stanford, McCaffrey rushed for 3,915 yards on 631 carries (6.2 YPC) to go along with 100 receptions for 1,213 yards receiving and 31 total touchdowns over the course of 37 games.
