Steelers And LT Kelvin Beachum Have Had Extension Discussions

According to Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports, the Steelers and LT Kelvin Beachum have spoken about a possible contract extension, though there has been “not much” progress towards meeting an agreement at this point in time.

Now with HC Mike Tomlin, GM Kevin Colbert, and DE Cameron Heyward all signing extensions within the past week, it seems the team has now turned it’s focus on Beachum.

In fact, this is the first confirmation of negotiations since reports surfaced back in June that the team has yet to reach out to him.

The Steelers have a history of negotiating long-term term deals for players entering the final year of their rookie agreements, but the team has made a point to shut contract talks down once the season is underway.

While it is unclear on how close the two sides are in coming to an agreement, it could be taken as shocking that there has been little progress, given that there was once talk that Beachum would be one of the first players among the Steelers’ extensive list of players entering their final season under contract to be signed.

Beachum is among a number of Steelers’ players entering contract years in 2015. This list includes: OT Mike Adams, G Ramon Foster, NT Steve McLendon, CB William Gay, DE Cam Thomas, DE Clifton Geathers, QB Bruce Gradkowski, FB Will Johnson, LB Sean Spence, S Will Allen, WR Darrius Heyward-Bey and LS Greg Warren.

Beachum, 26, has one year remaining on his four-year, $2.146 million rookie contract, which includes a base salary of $1.542 million.

In 2014, Beachum appeared in all 16 games for the Steelers was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 5 offensive tackle out of 84 qualifying players. Beachum particularly excelled in pass protection where he rated as the No. 4 offensive tackle out of this group.

We will provide more information regarding Beachum and the Steelers as the news becomes available.
