Steelers CB Ike Taylor Could Be On The Chopping Block

Joel Corry of CBS Sports writes that Steelers CB Ike Taylor could be released this offseason in order to address their salary cap issues.

The Steelers rank third on Corry’s list of teams with the worst salary cap situations, behind only the Saints and Cowboys, coming in close to $10.5 million over the 2014 salary cap of $127.69 million

No longer a reliable player, Taylor is unlikely to play out the final year of his contract that would play him $7 million in non-guaranteed salary. Releasing Taylor, soon-to-be 34, would create $7 million in cap space alone.

The Steelers are set for an offseason of difficult decisions as we’ve previously discussed regarding S Troy Polamalu and LB LaMarr Woodley who are also in  similar situations.

Releasing Polamalu and his $8.25 million salary would free up $8.25 million of cap room. Woodley’s situation is a little different given that they would actually take a cap hit to release him at the start of the 2014 season. Instead, Pittsburgh could wait until June 1 to release him . This would create $8 million of cap room for the 2014 season, but would also come with an $8.58 million cap hit the following year.

Either way, you can expect some big moves from the Steelers this offseason as they once again are in danger of losing some of their young players like Jason Worilds and Emmanuel Sanders during free agency.
