Steelers Claim QB Zach Mettenberger Off Waivers From Chargers

Jason La Canfora reports that the Steelers have claimed QB Zach Mettenberger off of waivers from the Chargers on Wednesday.

Mettenberger seemed like he could have been an option for the Cowboys, but they apparently did not place a claim for him, despite having a higher waiver priority. The Vikings are also in the market for quarterback help, but they too must not have felt it was worth placing a claim on him.

Mettenberger, 24, is a former sixth-round pick of the Titans back in 2014. He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $2.345 million rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $600,000 for the 2016 season.

The Titans cut him loose back in May, but he was claimed off of waivers by the Chargers. San Diego elected to cut Mettenberger loose on Tuesday, as they got down to the 75-man roster limit.

In 2015, Mettenberger appeared in seven games and threw for 935 yards while completing 60.8 percent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and seven interceptions.
