Steelers Cut Byron Leftwich, Plan To Re-sign Him

The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced that they will release Byron Leftwich despite the fact that they are currently short on quarterbacks.

The move is less shocking than it may initially seem because this a roster manipulation technique used by teams to expand their rosters to 54. Basically, a team will decided to cut a vested veteran whom they have already agreed to re-sign once he is released. Leftwich will rejoin the team instead of becoming a free agent.

This move will allow the Steelers to stash an extra player on their practice squad instead of losing someone who could help them right away.

Leftwich shouldn’t even have his salary adjusted for the few days that he off of the roster.
