Steelers Place DE Brett Keisel On Season-Ending I.R. & Sign DE Clifton Geathers

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Monday that they have placed DE Brett Keisel on season-ending injured reserve and signed DE Clifton Geathers to take his place on their active roster.

  • Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported Sunday night that Keisel suffered a torn tricep during Sunday’s game and was out for the remainder of the 2014 season, so this doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

Keisel, 36, found little interest during free agency and it wasn’t until reports mentioned that he was flying to Arizona to visit with the Cardinals before the Steelers decided to get involved.

He ultimately signed a two-year, $3 million contract that included a $500,000 signing bonus. He stands to make a base salary of $1.5 million for the 2015 season.

Heading into Week 13, Keisel had recorded 14 tackles, one sack, an interceptions and five pass defenses over the course of 11 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 34 defensive end in a 3-4 system out of 47 qualifying players.

Geathers, 26, is a former sixth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns. However, he has bounced around quite a bit in the NFL as he has played for the Dolphins, Seahawks, Cowboys, Eagles, Colts and Redskins since entering the league back in 2010.

Washington signed him to a contract this past March and while he was able to make the final 53-man roster, he was cut loose a month ago after appearing in six games.
