Steelers DE Cam Thomas Could Be A Potential Cap Casualty

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes that Steelers DE Cam Thomas could be a potential cap casualty for the this offseason.

As things stand right now, the Steelers have a pretty decent defensive front on paper with DE Cameron Heyward, DE Stephon Tuitt and NT Steve McLendon.

However, Dulac mentions that beyond these three players, there isn’t a lot of depth on the Steelers’ defensive line.

Thomas, 28, still has another year remaining on his two-year, $4 million contract that he signed with the Steelers back in March of last year. He stands to make a base salary of $2 million for the 2015 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Thomas will free up $2 million in cap space next year while also create $500,000 in dead money.

In 2014, Thomas recorded 18 tackles and a half sack over the course of 16 games for the Steelers. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the worst qualifying defensive end in a 3-4 defense last season.
