Steelers DT Casey Hampton Done In Pittsburgh?

Scott Brown of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that Steelers DT Casey Hampton will not require surgery to repair the ACL injury that he suffered during last weekends loss to the Denver Broncos.

While that’s good news for Hampton, the bad news is that he’s in a position where the team could be forced to move in a different direction come next season.

Hampton will make $5 million next season and Brown notes that the Steelers would be close to $20 million over the salary cap at this point in time. Yes Pittsburgh was in a similar situation last year but it could be even harder for them this season. Cutting Hampton would free up some much needed cap space but it would also create a huge hole in the middle of their defensive line. It will be interesting to see if they choose to move on with Hampton and possibly draft his replacement this year.
