Steelers Expected To Discuss Extension With DE Stephon Tuitt Before 2017 Season

According to Mark Kaboly of DKPittsburghSports, the Steelers will likely attempt to sign DL Stephon Tuitt to an extension before the start of the 2017 season.

It’s not surprising to hear that Tuitt is likely to be an extension candidate for Pittsburgh, considering that he’s one of the team’s best young defensive players and will be in the final year of his contract.

Getting Tuitt locked up long-term could prove to be difficult and require a very competitive offer from the Steelers, as players have been more and more reluctant to do contracts before free agency, considering how much the salary cap has increased the past few years.

Even so, I’m sure the lure of staying with the Steelers long-term would appeal to Tuitt, especially if they make him a solid offer later on in the year.

Tuitt, 23, is a former second-round pick of the Steelers back in 2014. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $4,609,444 rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $1,048,560 for the 2017 season.

In 2016, Tuitt appeared in 14 games for the Steelers and recorded 37 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 20 interior defensive lineman out of 127 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding an extension for Tuitt as the news is available.
