Steelers Expected To Extend Ben Roethlisberger’s Contract

Adam Schefter reports that the Steelers are expected to restructure and extend the contract of QB Ben Roethlisberger before the new league year begins on March 13.

Schefter mentions that this move would create salary cap space and also make it more palatable to trade WR Antonio Brown this offseason if they decide to go in that direction.

Chris Mortensen adds that the Steelers have no issues with taking on a $21 million dead cap hit by trading Brown, given that they will receive a $14.5 million cap credit back in 2019 for RB Le’Veon Bell that hasn’t been calculated yet.

Roethlisberger, 36, is in the second year of his five-year, $99 million contract that includes $64 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $12 million over the final two years of the agreement.

In 2018, Roethlisberger appeared in 16 games for the Steelers and completed 67 percent of his passes for 5,129 yards, 34 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
