Update:

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Tuesday that they have officially promoted linebackers coach Keith Butler to defensive coordinator.

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Steelers are poised to name Keith Butler as their next defensive coordinator.

  • According to Dulac, Butler is finalizing a three-year contract with Pittsburgh.
  • Steelers HC Mike Tomlin reportedly met with Butler on Monday at the team’s facility.

This comes just a few days after long-time defense coordinator Dick LeBeau informed the team that he was resigning from his position.

Butler, 58, has been the team’s linebackers coach since 2003 and has been the obvious candidate to replace LeBeau as the team’s defensive coordinator.

LeBeau has spent the last 11 years with the Steelers and helped them win Super Bowl titles. He’s among the most respected defensive coaches in the NFL and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010.

Reports from earlier in the day mentioned that LeBeau has already spoken to Cardinals HC Bruce Arians about possibly joining the team’s coaching staff in an unspecified role.
