Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review tweets that incoming OC Todd Haley has yet to contact QB Ben Roethlisberger. Kaboly also doubts that Roethlisberger will reach out first, so it appears that the OC and his star are already at odds.
This developing story is a strange one, as it centers around… nothing. The media everywhere pitted Roethlisberger and Haley against each other and the fact that Haley hasn’t called Roethlisberger (not surprising in itself, given the coach’s stoic manner), has garnered all sorts of rumors of dysfunction. It will be interesting in the coming days to see how this plays out and if player or coach breaks with history and reaches out to end this snowballing story.
Next up in Steelers news: Jamison Hensley of ESPN notes that T Marcus Gilbert will move from right to left tackle for 2012. Gilbert will replace Max Starks, who, even if he recovers in a timely fashion from January’s ACL surgery, will be a free agent in the upcoming market.
This move sounds like a response to the cap situation in Pittsburgh, where they will have to adopt a slash-and-burn approach to meet the cap before the commencement of the free agent market on March 13th. It’s unlikely they’d commit anything significant to retaining Starks when they can shuffle their line in this manner.
