Steelers Not Ruling Out Re-Signing DE Brett Keisel

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin acknowledged on Monday that they need to add more depth to their defensive line and re-signing veteran DE Brett Keisel remains an option, per Scott Brown.

Some have assumed that Keisel could call it a career given his advanced age, but he has maintained throughout the offseason that intends to play in 2014. There has been some speculation that he could back with the Steelers now that the free agent market has wound down without Pittsburgh more depth at defensive end.

The Steelers have Nick Williams, a 2013 seventh-round pick who landed on the injured-reserve last season, as the team’s (possessive issues again) starting right defensive end. Opposite of him, Pittsburgh has former first-round pick Cameron Heyward whom they’ve already committed to through the 2015 season.

Keisel, 35, has spent all of his 11 years of his career with the Steelers. In 2013, Keisel accumulated four sacks and 29 tackles over the course of 12 games.

Pro Football Focus has Keisel rated as the No. 31 overall defensive end in a  3-4 system last year, but also an above-average run-defender.
