Steelers OL Mike Munchak “Early Favorite” For Broncos’ HC Job

According to Ian Rapoport, Steelers OL Mike Munchak has emerged as the “early favorite” for the Broncos’ head-coaching job.

The Broncos are still scheduled to interview Bears DC Vic Fangio, but Rapoport says Munchak appears to be the guy to keep an eye on.

On Saturday, Adam Schefter reported that Munchak has “strong interest” in the Denver Broncos’ head-coaching job.

Schefter mentions that Munchak has both professional and personal ties to Denver and shares the same agent as Broncos executive VP John Elway. Beyond that, Munchak’s daughter and her family all live in Denver.

Last year, Munchak took his name out of the running for the Cardinals’ job, even though he was considered a top candidate for the job.

Schefter adds that Munchak has been incredibly selective because of his feelings for the Steelers. However, it sounds like he’d be willing to move on for an opportunity with the Broncos.

The list of reported interviews for the Broncos includes:

  1. Rams QBs coach Zac Taylor (Interviewed)
  2. Former Colts HC Chuck Pagano (Interviewed)
  3. Steelers OL Coach Mike Munchak (Interviewed)
  4. Patriots DC Brian Flores (Interviewed)
  5. Bears DC Vic Fangio (Scheduled)

Munchak has also drawn interest from the Packers, Dolphins and Browns, so he’s a fairly popular coaching candidate.

Munchak, 58, played 12 years in the NFL for the Houston Oilers. He was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, four-time first-team All-Pro, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2011.

Munchak began his NFL coaching career in 1994 with the Oilers as their offensive assistant/quality control coach and eventually worked his way up to being the Titans head coach in 2011. After Tennessee fired following his third season, Munchak agreed to become the Steelers’ offensive line coach in 2014.
