Steelers Pick Up DL Cameron Heyward’s Fifth-Year Option Despite Report

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially exercised DL Cameron Heyward‘s fifth-year option on Monday, according to Allen Robinson of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.

Heyward will make $6.969 million for the 2015 season should the two sides not have a long-term contract in place before then. This salary is only guaranteed for injury.

Heyward, 24, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and will make $1,289,322 for the 2014 season.

There hasn’t been a lot of buzz regarding an extension in recent months, but if the team is willing to pick up his option, you would think that they would explore a long-term contract at some point in the near future.

Last year, he appeared in all 16 games and totaled 59 tackles, five sacks and a fumble recovery for the Steelers.

Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 18 defensive end in 3-4 defense last season.
