Steelers Renegotiating The Contracts Of Ben Roethlisberger & Lawrence Timmons

Update:

Albert Breer reports that the Steelers have in fact restructured Lawrence Timmons‘ contract. The Move is expected to create $5 million in cap space.

The Steelers are reportedly working to restructure the contracts of players like Ben Roethlisberger to get down to the NFL’s salary cap before the start of the new league year, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

Bouchette mentions that the LB Lawrence Timmons is also restructuring his current deal. Both moves could be completed by the end of the week, which should give them an idea of whether or not they’ll be able to sign free agent WR Steve Breaston.

According to Bouchette, these moves could free up close to $9 million in cap space.

Pittsburgh reportedly met with the Representatives for LB James Harrison at the combine regarding his contract as well and could approach LaMarr Woodley at some point in near the future.

The Steelers also reworked a number of contracts last year, so this is really a familiar tactic for them. The Problem is that in order to do this, they’re essentially guaranteeing salaries for the coming years, which could create further cap issues. This will, however, give them room to address their some roster holes during the offseason, but it’s unlikely that they would be able to re-sign WR Mike Wallace.
