Steelers Waive Fifth-Round Pick OL Wesley Johnson, Promote S Ross Ventrone

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially waived fifth-round pick OL Wesley Johnson on Saturday and signed S Ross Ventrone to their active roster.

Give that Steelers will be without S Shamarko Thomas (hamstring) for Week 6, this move is most likely them bolstering their safety depth ahead of Sunday’s game against the Browns.

Johnson has yet to be active for Pittsburgh, so it would not be surprising to see him sign on to the Steelers’ practice squad next week.

Johnson started all 51 games he played in during his career at Vanderbilt. He lined up at numerous positions, although most of his starts came at left tackle. Johnson was named first-team All-SEC last year.

Ventrone, 28, hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since the 2011 when he was playing for the Patriots.
