Stephen Jones: Re-Signing DL David Irving Long-Term Would Be “Real Difficult”

Cowboys executive Stephen Jones said that re-signing restricted free agent DL David Irving to a long-term contract extension would be “real difficult” since Irving has struggled to stay healthy.

He needs to put together a full season and consistency & all of that. Obviously played outstanding when he was healthy. I think it’d be real difficult to figure out something long-term with David,” said Jones, via Brandon George.

Irving, 24, originally signed on with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa State back in 2015. He was waived at the start of the regular season and later added to the Chiefs’ practice squad.

The Cowboys signed him to their active roster just a few weeks into the 2015 season and he’s been with them ever since. Dallas brought Irving back on a one-year, $615,000 exclusive rights contract.

He served a four-game suspension last season for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drugs policy.

In 2017, Irving appeared in eight games for the Cowboys and recorded 22 total tackles, seven sacks, one forced fumbles, and six pass defenses. ProFootballFocus rated him as the No. 29 overall interior defender out of 122 qualifying players.
