Steve Smith Returning To The Giants Next Season?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter writes that the New York Giants decision regarding free agent WR Mario Manningham could open the door for Steve Smith to return.

Manningham will wind up commanding a contract that pays him considerably more thanVictor Cruz, who has emerged as one of the top wide receivers in the game,” writes Schefter. “But if the Giants lose Manningham, they could turn back to their former receiver, Steve Smith, now with the Eagles, who would be amenable to returning to New York.”

This is idea that Schefter has been proposing for weeks know so he must have a decent understanding of the team’s plans for free agency. Smith had a largely disappointing season in Philadelphia which could very well play into the Giants hand as he’s not going to require as large of contract as Manningham will command.

The only issue I can see is that Cruz’s role in the Giants’ offense was similar to Smith’s when he was with the team so one of the two players would have to adjust to a new role. Most likely, that would be Smith.
