Texans Meeting With Free Agent TEs Gary Barnidge, Jacob Tamme & Brian Parker

Update:

Aaron Wilson is now reporting that the Texans are working out free agent TE Brian Parker on Tuesday of next week.

Parker, 25, originally signed on with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Albany back in 2015. He was unable to make the 53-man roster last year but was later claimed off of waivers by the Chiefs.

Parker was waived with a failed physical designation at the start of last season. The Jets signed Parker to a contract this past April before waiving him with an injury designation last month and eventually cutting him loose with an injury settlement.

In 2015, Parker appeared in nine games for the Chiefs and recorded one reception for six yards receiving.

Aaron Wilson confirms that the Texans are looking for reinforcements at tight end, and are expected to meet with Gary Barnidge as soon as Friday along with some other free agents.

  • Wilson adds that free agent TE Jacob Tamme is another option being evaluated by the Texans.

Tamme, 32, is a former fourth-round pick of the Colts back in 2008. He spent four years in Indianapolis before signing on with the Broncos back in 2012.

The Falcons later signed him to a two-year, $4 million contract that included $400,000 guaranteed back in 2015 and he has been testing the open market since March.

In 2016, Tamme appeared in eight games for the Falcons and caught 22 passes for 210 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 14 tight end out of 63 qualifying players.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media mentions that it would not be surprising to see the Texans bring in free agent TE Gary Barnidge for a visit, given that they have three tight ends dealing with concussions.

Houston has already placed C.J. Fiedorowicz on injured reserve and Barnidge happens to be the best available player at the position.

Rapoport adds that the Texans adding Barnidge “makes too much sense.

Barnidge previously visited with the Bills and Jaguars but there hasn’t been any reported interest in him the past few months.

Barnidge, 31, is a former fifth-round pick of the Panthers back in 2008. He spent five years in Carolina before signing a three-year contract with the Browns.

The Browns somewhat surprisingly cut Barnidge loose a few months ago after they traded up in round one to get Miami TE David Njoku.

In 2016, Barnidge appeared in all 16 games and caught 55 passes for 612 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 25 tight end out of 63 qualifying players.
