Texans Claim TE Matt Lengel, Waive QB Taylor Heinicke

The Houston Texans announced Friday that they’ve claimed TE Matt Lengel off waivers from the Browns and waived QB Taylor Heinicke.

Lengel, 27, wound up signing on with the Bengals as an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Kentucky back in 2016. He spent his rookie season on the team’s practice squad before returning to the team on a future/reserve contract last year.

The Bengals once again waived him coming out of the preseason. He had a brief stint with the Patriots before the Browns signed him to their practice squad last October and eventually promoted him to their active roster.

In 2017, Lengal was active for one game, but did not record a statistic.

Heinicke, 25, wound up signing on with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent out of Old Dominion back in 2015. He managed to make the 53-man roster during his rookie season but wasn’t active for a single game.

The Vikings placed him on the non-football injury list at the start of the 2016 season with an ankle injury before bringing him back towards the end of the season. Unfortunately, the Vikings elected to waive Heinicke with an injury designation coming out of the preseason last year before eventually cutting him loose with an injury settlement.

Heinicke had a brief stint on the Patriots’ practice squad and then signed with the Texans’ practice squad and eventually being called up in December.

In 2017, Heinicke appeared in one game for the Texans and completed one pass for 10 yards and rushed for two yards.
