Texans DC Romeo Crennel’s Contract Expires Next Week, HOU Interested In Bringing Him Back

Adam Caplan of ESPN reports that contract for Texans DC Romeo Crennel is set to expire next Tuesday, which would make him a free agent.

Crennel has said that he has no intention of retiring, so it’s possible he could draw interest from other teams who are in the market for a defensive coordinator.

On Monday, Texans HC Bill O’Brien stressed the importance of bringing Crennel back and made it clear he’s hoping for him to return.

I think Romeo has done a great job,” O’Brien said, via the Houston Chronicle. “I know we would love to have him back.

“I can tell you Romeo is a great coach and just means a lot to me personally. We would love to have Romeo back here.

Crennel, 69, began his NFL coaching career with the Giants back in 1981 as their special teams/defensive assistant After over a decade with the Giants, Crennel was hired to coach the Patriots’ defensive line in 1993.

Crennel later bounced around a bit before he was hired as the Browns’ head coach in 2005. He lasted four years in Cleveland before later joining the Chiefs as their defense coordinator. The Texans hired him to run their defense in 2014 and he’s remained with the team since.

In 2016, the Texans ranked No. 1 in yards allowed, No. 11 in points allowed, No. 12 in rushing yards and No. 2 in passing yards.

We’ll have more regarding Crennel and the Texans as the news is available.
