Texans Discussed Adding Colin Kaepernick, Tom Savage Expected To Remain Starter

Texans HC Bill O’Brien told reporters on Monday that they did discuss the possibility of bringing in free agent QB Colin Kaepernick after they lost Deshaun Watson for the season with a torn ACL last week, per Sarah Barshop.

However, O’Brien said he expects Tom Savage to remain the team’s starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Rams, per Barshop.

When asked if he wanted to sign Kaepernick, O’Brien said: “I coach the football team. That’s what I’m in charge of.

“I like the guys that we have and we’ll continue to try to coach them,” O’Brien added, per Aaron Wilson.

On Sunday, Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reported that “there has been some chatter inside the [Texans’] building whether or not they take a look at Colin Kaepernick” given that he would fit what they’re trying to do on offense.

There has been any serious interest in Kaepernick since this summer when the Ravens were discussing the possibility of signing him to a contract after Joe Flacco suffered a back injury.

Before that, Kaepernick met with the Seahawks, but they elected to sign Austin Davis instead.

Kaepernick, 29, is a former second-round pick of the 49ers back in 2010. He was in the third year of his seven-year, $126.97 million contract that included $61 million guaranteed when reached an agreement with the 49ers on a restructured deal.

In 2016, Kaepernick has completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 2,241 yards and 16 touchdowns and four interceptions, while adding 468 yards rushing. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 27 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players.
