Texans Exercise OLB Jadeveon Clowney’s Fifth-Year Option

John McClain reports that the Texans have exercised OLB Jadeveon Clowney‘s fifth-year option on Friday.

This is a pretty easy call for the Texans, given that Clowney put together an impressive breakout season for the Houston in 2016.

Even so, Clowney’s injury history will always be a concern for him moving forward. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee back in January and has had other procedures performed on his knees in the past.

The fifth-year option is guaranteed only for injury and won’t prevent them from working on a long-term extension over the next year.

Clowney, 24, is a former No. 1 overall pick of the Texans back in 2014. He was in the final year of his four-year, $22.272 million contract.

In 2016, Clowney appeared in 14 games for the Texans and recorded 52 tackles, six sacks, a forced fumble and two pass defenses for the Texans. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 9 edge defender out of 109 qualifying players.
