Texans Head Coach Rumors

Here’s a running list of rumors related to the Texans head coaching search.

  • John McClain of Houston Chronicle reports that Texans owner Bob McNair wants to have a deal done with Bill O’Brien “as soon as possible” to prevent him from signing with another NFL team.  (Update: 3:20 pm)
    • McClain adds that “barring unforeseen complications,” the Texans are still expected to hire O’Brien.
  • Jason La Canfora reports that “every expectation” is that Bill O’Brien will be the next Texans head coach.

Monday

  • Jason La Canfora reports that Bill O’Brien could reach out to 49ers DL coach Jim Tomsula to be his defensive coordinator if a deal gets done. (Update: 6:38 pm)
  • ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that a deal between the Texans and Bill O’Brien is “imminent” and is expected to be finalized in the next 24 hours, per Tania Ganguli. (Update: 3:18 pm)
  • According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans are “closing in on” hiring Bill O’Brien away from Penn State to be their next head coach. (Update: 3:15 pm)
  • ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen reported a few days ago that that Penn State HC Bill O’Brien has emerged as the “overwhelming favorite” for the Texans head coaching job.
  • Texans have already interviewed former Bears HC Lovie Smith and interim HC Wade Phillips for the job.
  • Houston will reportedly meet with Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt this week regarding their head coaching vacancy.
