Texans Hosting DL Vince Wilfork For A Visit

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that former Patriots NT Vince Wilfork is in Houston and will meet with Texans.

  • According to McClain, there are “several” other teams in pursuit of Wilfork, but he may not be close to making a decision.
  • McClain adds that Houston is “recruiting him hard.”
  • Ian Rapoport confirms that Wilfork is visiting with the Texans, and adds that his familiarity with DC Romeo Crennel will be key.

Wilfork’s agent, Kennard McGuire, recently told Mark Berman of Houston’s Fox 26 that the Texans have a “legitimate shot” at signing his client.

The fact that Wilfork has ties to the organization also helps their odds of signing the five-time Pro Bowler.

I would not put anyone in the lead, but I would say that they have a legitimate shot to get him.” McGuire said. “Once again it’s because of familiarity, and if you look across the league guys do tend to migrate toward areas of familiarity.

“There are about five or six other teams, mostly AFC teams, couple in the NFC, that are looking to add a player of Vince’s magnitude.”

New England elected to not pick up the two-year team option included in his contract, which gave him the opportunity to test the open market.

Some have speculated that other 3-4 base defense teams like the Colts, Packers, and/or Ravens could have interest in Wilfork as well. A return to the Patriots could still be an option for him as well.

Wilfork, 33, appeared in 16 games and recorded 47 tackles, one interception and two pass defenses for New England. Pro Football Focus has Wilfork rated as the No. 13 defensive end in a 3-4 system.
