Texans K Nick Novak Hopes To Re-Sign With Team

Impending free agent K Nick Novak said he wants to re-sign with the Texans this offseason.

I want to be back,” Novak said, via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. “I’m really proud of what we’ve done and I’m excited to be back with the same guys. I really feel like I can help the Texans get to where they want to go. I leave it up to my agent and the personnel department to get a deal done.

Novak went on to say that he is unsure of the progress being made towards a new contract with the team. However, he believes signs are “positive” and that he has heard “really good things” from Houston’s staff.

I don’t know what kind of progress is being made, but it’s all positive. I’ve heard some really good things from [general manager] Rick Smith, [coach] Bill O’Brien, [special teams coordinator] Larry Izzo. We’ll see what happens.”

For what it’s worth, a source within the Texans believes the team “definitely” does not make the playoffs without Novak, so it appears the front office highly values him.

Novak, 35, was a somewhat surprising cut from the Chargers at the start of 2015 year. However, he managed to catch on with the Texans midseason and re-signed with the team following that season.

He just finished a one-year, $965,000 contract with the Texans and is set to become an unrestricted free agent,

In 2016, Novak appeared in all 16 games for the Texans and converted 35 field goals on 41 attempts (85.4 percent). He also recorded 22 extra points on 25 attempts (88 percent) and 23 touchbacks.

We will provide more information regarding Novak and the Texans as the news becomes available.
